Hiking Hawaii's Poamoho Trail on the island of Oahu offers an exhilarating adventure through lush forests, scenic landscapes, and breathtaking views. Spanning approximately 10 miles round trip, this challenging trail takes hikers on a journey through Never Never Land...across the stunning Koʻolau Mountain Range.
WE BEGIN WITH AN OFF-ROADING ADVENTURE...
The Poamoho Trail begins at the end of Poamoho Street as we need a PERMIT and a 4X4 Vehicle to start this Journey up the mountain side in Wahiawa. Once reaching the end of the Dirt Roadway we jumped out of the Jeep as we continued on foot immediately immersing ourselves in a verdant forest canopy.
This trail gains elevation quickly, providing a strenuous workout right from the start. As you ascend, you'll be surrounded by the sounds of native birds chirping and the rustling of leaves underfoot.
THE VIEWS ARE INSANE AS WE CONTINUE TO CLIMB...
The first part of the trail consists of well-maintained switchbacks that gradually lead you up the mountainside. As you make your way through the dense vegetation, you'll be treated to glimpses of panoramic vistas through the breaks in the trees. These early viewpoints offer an excellent opportunity to catch your breath and appreciate the beauty of the surrounding landscape.
THE HIKE CONTINUES TO GET MORE DIFFICULT...
Continuing further, the trail becomes steeper and more rugged. Be prepared for uneven terrain and occasional slippery sections, particularly after rainfall. The path is generally well-marked with ribbons or paint, but it's always advisable to have a trail map or GPS device with you for navigation.
IT ALL STARTS TO BECOME UNREAL...
As you climb higher, the trail meanders through diverse ecosystems, including lush fern forests and groves of native trees like koa and ʻōhiʻa. The rich biodiversity of the area provides hikers with ample opportunities to spot unique flora and fauna along the way. It is here where the hard work on this Hike truly starts to pay off as the views become not only UNREAL, but as if you are walking through NEVER-NEVER LAND!
THE ULTIMATE PAYOFF AND SUMMIT...
One of the highlights of the Poamoho Trail is the awe-inspiring summit view. Upon reaching the top, you'll be rewarded with sweeping vistas of Oahu's North Shore, the central plain, and the neighboring mountains. On clear days, you may even catch a glimpse of the neighboring islands of Maui, Molokai, and Lanai in the distance. It's an ideal spot to rest, refuel, and take in the sheer natural beauty that surrounds you.
ONE MUST BE FULLY PREPARED FOR THIS ADVENTURE...
Due to the trail's rugged nature and challenging terrain, it's recommended for experienced hikers or those in good physical condition. Adequate preparation is essential, including wearing sturdy hiking shoes, carrying plenty of water, and packing necessary supplies to get you through the entire day or Weekend if you stay at one of the Cabins along the Mountain range as we did!
IF STAYING OVERNIGHT...PREPARE FOR THE WEATHER!
It's important to note that weather conditions can change rapidly in the mountains, so checking the forecast and being prepared for variable weather is crucial. Additionally, respecting the environment and practicing Leave No Trace principles is essential to preserve the natural beauty of the area.
A ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE IN HAWAII!
